STEVEN WALSTON
Assistant Professor of Research in Ophthalmology
Steven Walston is an Assistant Professor of Research Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He earned his B.E. from Vanderbilt University in 2010 and his M.S. and PhD from the University of Southern California in 2012 and 2016. He pursued postdoctoral research at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology through 2022.
Steven’s research has focused on vision restoration and the development of neurotechnologies to provide bidirectional communication with the retina, cortex, and peripheral nervous system. His retinal electrophysiology work has supported the understanding of neural degeneration caused by retinitis pigmentosa and the development of electronic retinal prostheses that restore partial vision to blind individuals. In efforts to improve the quality of communication at the electrode-neural tissue interface, he has researched the performance of nanomaterial-based microelectrode technologies and developed microfabrication strategies for their high-density integration into flexible thin film devices.
